On our way to the island of Brac, we took a ferry from the coastal town of Split. We soon discovered that Split is itself quite the tourist attraction. The center of the town is built around the remains of Diocletian's Palace, built in AD639.
This ancient Roman palace covered an area of several square blocks, all enclosed by a multistory stone wall with multiple portals for entry and exit.
Once inside you wander through a maze of tiny allies which run between market squares, arcades, towers, churches and all kinds of architectural wonders.
Some former palaces to Roman gods were later converted into churches. Below, one of these former palaces became a church, with a baptismal font in the center.
Apparently "Game-of-thrones" was filmed in part around the alleys of Split.
Due to COVID, like most other parts of Croatia, Split also was fairly devoid of tourists, so many of the market squares were partially empty and many of the restaurants were closed.
That makes for a unique tourist experience when you're not having to fight crowds.
Up the hill on the north end of town you get great views of Split, the harbor, and the Adriatic ocean.
Now there's some real big yuccas! The terrain is much like you would expect of a rocky Mediterranean coastal harbor. In the distance you can see the ferries waiting to load in the harbor.
Back in town, there are great examples of the rich architectural history of this place.
Don't know what these guys/gals are yelling about???
After a long day of wandering through the allies of Split, a relaxing cruise across the channel on the ferryboat, watching the sun go down, was just what we needed.
The next morning, preparing to leave, we were greeted by a beautiful sunrise in our little resort full of olive trees and pines.
What a beautiful sea side destination.....the mountains, the ruins, the Palm trees, the ocean and the blue, blue skies. Top it off with no tourists....lucky you!!
