POLAND (Part II) - Mountains and Castles

While in Poland visiting our friend Dorota, we were able to make a couple of side trips into the mountains in the south on the Czech border. Some friends of Dorota, Ela and her relatives took us for a tram ride and hike.

We also wandered through a spa resort community in the mountains.

We wandered through the resort, and also went for a walk through the woods to a waterfall.

On another day we were able to spend a couple of days with Dorota's bother Bogden, and his friend Lucy. The trip included lunch at a fish pond. Fresh fish straight out of the pond!

Stopped on the way, at a "wooden" church. The entire church and everything in it is made of wood.

We spent a day wandering through a castle.

The castle is surrounded by elaborate gardens.

Quite the dining hall, wouldn't you say?

Some former tenants of the castle...

Now that's what I call a real castle!

Stayed overnight in Poland's version of "Park City"

Another day we went hiking through the mountains to a lake. Their "trails" are much more developed and formal than what we are used to seeing in the U.S. and usually involve a restaurant along the trail.

Lovely, peaceful mountain scenery.

Rounded out the trip with a visit to a local mountain spa resort built during the German years.

Then we're off to another castle (ruins this time).

Ah, the trophy room!

Don't lose your head!  ...and then there's the village stocks, for public shaming...

We have coat racks, they had armor racks...

Of course, no mountain/castle tour would be complete without this little park full of miniatures of all the local castles and historical buildings. Didn't know there were so many in Poland.

These guys put the rest of Europe to shame...

"Hoher Dachstein" what a mountain.

We decided to take a day trip and spend some money to ride one of the trams up the Dachstein, the highest mountain in Upper Austria. There are a couple of trams, one which goes higher from the south side, and this one, the "Krippensteiner Seilbahn." At the top they have built this metal thing called the "five fingers," where you hang out over the cliff for a view.   Not much grows up here at this altitude except low lying shrubs and a whole lot of wildflowers. Wow, what an impressive mountain.   A whole bunch of crazy dare-devils come up here to jump off the mountain into the air.   OK, ready, set, go, and run like your life depends on it! It does, by the way!   If you catch the draft just right you go up rather than down.   We made it to the top... of this part of the mountain anyway. Incredible views of the valleys below. There's the Hallstättersee.

BRAC, CROATIA - Olive orchards, tiny fishing villages, and rocky coastline

Made it to Brac, one of many islands along the Dalmatian coast. To get over to the island you have to drive or walk onto a ferry boat. . Ah, the sleepy little town of Supetar, the largest village on the island of Brac. It's October, past the tourist season, but you would think there would still be a few people here. The weather is mild, ocean still warm, but COVID travel restrictions killed their tourist business. We were the only tourists in a huge resort of probably 500 units. Pools were all drained, restaurants all closed, etc. The usually busy tourist options sat still, like this nice little boat that usually provides sailing tours. Ah, but the swim beaches were open. We practically had the entire beach and swim bay to ourselves. Water was still warm, so we swam around and watched the fish circle our feet and legs. Perfect opportunity to lay around in the sun and dangle your legs in the ocean. Spent a couple of days driving around the island to the other small villages. Not a ...

GOSAUSEE wander

Some of the most beautiful lakes are by the Dachstein near Gosau. This incredible canyon has a series of three lakes at the foot of the mountain. Twice we went to hike around the lakes. The first attempt ended in a massive thunderstorm, which made for great pictures but a lot of wet clothes. We started out on what appeared to be a bright sunny day. As a slight sprinkle began we decided to eat our lunches and wait it out under some trees. The slight sprinkle turned into a massive storm with clouds so dark it seemed like night. For quite some time we could barely see the other side of the lake. Our little hideout under the trees became insufficient and we had to move under some nearby cliffs, where we could watch the water pour off the canyon side in torrents. After about an hour waiting we decided to brave the storm, which had slowed a bit by now, and run back around the lake to the car. When we got back the storm had subsided. I love how the clouds hover around the valley and base of t...
