The Castle Hunt

Found a web site that listed castles in Austria by province, with descriptions, history, etc. Spent a couple of days going castle hopping.  Just pick a direction and go!
This one perched on top of a hill overlooking the Donau, has been turned into a private residence.

A little big for my tastes, but impressive.

They turned this castle into a hotel and wedding reception center. Almost interrupted a wedding taking photos.
You can stay overnight, and go horse back riding through the countryside.

This little castle was not quite as well maintained.

A bit of moss in the main courtyard, and overgrown with trees.

Wow, it used to be several stories high inside. No floors remain, just exterior walls.

Peek-a-boo

Hohenwerfen's tours and falconry demonstrations start in April.

This one was turned into a private school for girls.

Some rich guy bought this for a private residence.  The lake and multi-acre gardens are well hidden behind walls and tall hedges.
Mom and Dad used to visit this castle when they were dating.
A bit fragile.  Hope nothing collapses on us.
The main courtyard.

A couple of "castle at dusk" photos.

Yep, that's me waving from the top of the lookout tower.
Found the priest's secret chamber and castle exit under the chapel.

What a way to end the day!

Of course, castle pictures would be incomplete without "Festung Hohen Salzburg" on top of the hill in the center of the city of Salzburg.

"Hoher Dachstein" what a mountain.

We decided to take a day trip and spend some money to ride one of the trams up the Dachstein, the highest mountain in Upper Austria. There are a couple of trams, one which goes higher from the south side, and this one, the "Krippensteiner Seilbahn." At the top they have built this metal thing called the "five fingers," where you hang out over the cliff for a view.   Not much grows up here at this altitude except low lying shrubs and a whole lot of wildflowers. Wow, what an impressive mountain.   A whole bunch of crazy dare-devils come up here to jump off the mountain into the air.   OK, ready, set, go, and run like your life depends on it! It does, by the way!   If you catch the draft just right you go up rather than down.   We made it to the top... of this part of the mountain anyway. Incredible views of the valleys below. There's the Hallstättersee.

Griasdi, Do sa'ma! (translation) Hello there, here we are!

OK, looks like we made it, and are off to our two year adventure.  Despite spending most of the first month getting our visa paperwork together, getting insurance, finding a place to live, buying furniture and other furnishings for our new home, and all that other not so fun stuff, we have been able to spend a little time checking out the beautiful sites and touristy things around here. Bad Ischl for the day Our new home. Let's hope they let us stay. The winter hasn't been very wintery. Going for a walk up the neighborhood street Across the street from the house An evening walk at the beach The Attersee (our lake) the Almsee Yep, it's winter here, but less snow than usual

PLITVICKA NATIONAL PARK - CROATIA

I had seen a few internet posts about this place, and was determined to make a stop here on the way to Brac. It is definitely worth the detour. We ended up spending a second day wandering around the lakes and through the waterfalls. Coming into the national park from the north after leaving Zagreb, we started to encounter examples of the beauty that awaited us, as we passed through a town full of travertine pools and waterfalls. Plitvicka National Park is a larger area of forested hills, but the main attraction is a series of lakes, created by calcium deposits which form little dams and terraced pools between the trees and vegetation along the base of a canyon. There are three main lakes, but countless smaller pools in between. You can start at the top or the bottom of the area. By starting at the bottom you are always looking forward and up at the next waterfall. The first set of waterfalls is below the first lake. Got to take one of those "yes, we were here" pictures. Grea...
