POLAND (Part III) - Krakow

While in Poland we had the chance to visit Krakow for a couple of days. A beautiful and fascinating city. The castle near the center of town is still used to house government offices. They do give tours through part of the castle though, and there are plenty of tourists here even in these Corona-virus times. On a tour through the church we got to go up in one of the bell towers. Back in town, if you look close, to the left of this church you can see the statues of the 12 apostles (actually, only 11). As with most European cities, the center of town is closed off to vehicles, as a pedestrian zone. Wandering the streets and walkways with friends makes for a very enjoyable time. Dorota had arranged everything for us again. The guide who walked us around was extremely well versed in Polish and Krakow history, even though he was originally a South American. We wandered around town for hours. They have a beautiful old opera houses which is now a theatre.  This little gem is part of the defe

POLAND (Part II) - Mountains and Castles

While in Poland visiting our friend Dorota, we were able to make a couple of side trips into the mountains in the south on the Czech border. Some friends of Dorota, Ela and her relatives took us for a tram ride and hike. We also wandered through a spa resort community in the mountains. We wandered through the resort, and also went for a walk through the woods to a waterfall. On another day we were able to spend a couple of days with Dorota's bother Bogden, and his friend Lucy. The trip included lunch at a fish pond. Fresh fish straight out of the pond! Stopped on the way, at a "wooden" church. The entire church and everything in it is made of wood. We spent a day wandering through a castle. The castle is surrounded by elaborate gardens. Quite the dining hall, wouldn't you say? Some former tenants of the castle... Now that's what I call a real castle! Stayed overnight in Poland's version of "Park City" Another day we went hiking through the mountains

WROCLAW POLAND - "Tak, jedlismy Pierogi!" (translation: yes, we ate pierogi!)

In August we decided to brave a trip to visit our good friend Dorota in Poland, in spite of Corona-virus restrictions. We were worried a bit about border crossings, driving from Austria, through the Czech Republic, and into Poland, but it went very smoothly. There were not even border guards. Dorota made all kinds of arrangements for us (places to stay, tour guides, visits with her friends, Polish history lessons). People are very friendly, and many of them speak English. Most of the time we wandered through Wroclaw, where Dorota lives. Wandered through the town hall. Fantastic old woodwork on display here! Hard to tell but, yes, those are Pierogi (Polish dumplings) on the little plate at the top. We had potato pancakes three times, and each time they were different. The first night Dorota got us tickets to the last showing of the famous Raclawice Panorama in Wroclaw. We made it more famous by being among the last visitors before it was closed to be remodeled.  Not a lot of tourists he
